A Homebrew Beer Recipe

Style (BJCP): 
10D. Brown Ale - American Brown Ale
Extract Ingredients: 
  • 4 lb Pilsen Light LME
  • 2 lb Rye Malt LME
  • 1 lb Smoked Malt
  • .75lb Special Roast
  • .5 lb Chocolate Rye
  • .5 lb Flaked Rye
  • .5 lb Flaked Corn
  • .25 lb Pale Chocolate Malt
  • .3 lb Rice Hulls
  • .5oz Northern Brewer @ 60 min
  • .5 Crystal @ 20 min
  • Voyager, S-04 Yeast
  • 4 oz Taosted Oak Chips
  • Your Favorite Bourbon
Extract Instructions: 
  1. Add Oak Chips to bourbon in a pint jar, let age until bottling or kegging or secondary (depending on your method of packaging and preference)
  2. Bag all cracked whole grains. 
  3. Steep cracked grains in 5 qts water at 155 F for 40 minutes
  4. Rinse/sparge grains, filling boil pot to desired boil level
  5. Stir in LME well, making sure none is stuck to the bottom of the pot
  6. Bring to a boil
  7. Add hops as scheduled, including yeast nutrient and clarifying agents if so desired over the course of the 1 hr boil
  8. Cool to 65 F and pitch yeast in fermenter, topping off the wort with clean cold water to reached desired volume and gravity
  9. Let ferment 2 weeks then move the beer off the yeast cake into secondary fermenter or keg
  10. In a bag or tea ball (or freestyled, if so desired) add bourbon soaked chips to beer
  11. Age 1-4 weeks, depending on how bad you wanna drink that beer
  12. Remove chips and package how you like
All Grain Ingredients: 
  • Replace LME with 5 lb Halcyon, 3 lb Rye Malt
All Grain Instructions: 
  1. Heat 4 gal strikewater up to 168 F and mash at 155 F for 40 min
  2. Heat to 168 F and sparge as you would a beer
  3. Follow the rest of the extract
